This course provides a broad historical survey of the Middle East from the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia to the present. Topics of focus will include the impact of pre-Islamic civilization on the modern Middle East: the advent, progression, and influence of Islamic faith and culture in the Middle East; the global interplay between the Middle East and the larger world through various eras of Middle Eastern history; the religious, ethnic, social, economic, military, and political developments that shape the modern Middle East; examination contemporary issues facing the Middle East.
