ARCH-01 INTRODUCTION TO ARCHAEOLOGY

This course is an introduction to the history, theory, concepts, and methods of the anthropological discipline of archaeology. How do we know anything about the ancient human past? This course answers that question, addressing survey methods, excavation, stratigraphy, dating techniques, artifact analysis, professional ethics, and the role of scientific inquiry in understanding the past, illustrated with examples from ancient cultures around the world. ARCH-01L FIELD ARCHAEOLOGY

1 unit: 3 hours lab.
CSU Transferable Only
Advisory: ENGL-01A.

This course provides the student with an opportunity to gain practical experience in archaeological field reconnaissance, archaeological site excavation, laboratory analysis of archaeological data and in the preparation of archaeological reports. Students will take part in surveys and excavations of local historic and prehistoric sites and/or perform laboratory analysis of their archaeological materials. (10/20)
