GENERAL EDUCATION
General Education at Merced College (MC) includes specifically approved courses required of all students, regardless of the program of study or career goals, for an Associate in Arts degree (AA), Associate in Science degree (AS), Associate of Arts for Transfer (AA-T), or Associate of Science for Transfer (AS-T).
Local General Education Breadth
All Associate in Arts degree (AA) and Associate in Science degree (AS) are REQUIRED to complete Associate Degree Breadth Requirements.

Transfer General Education Breadth
All Associate of Arts for Transfer (AA-T) and Associate of Science for Transfer (AS-T) are REQUIRED to complete either California State University-General Education (CSU-GE) Breadth Certification Requirements or Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC).
Students transferring to a California State University (CSU) can fulfill general education requirements with either CSU-GE or IGETC.
Students transferring to University of California (UC) can only use IGETC to fulfill general education requirements.

Transfer General Education Breadth for STEM
The CSU and UC will accept the CSU-GE for STEM and/or IGETC for STEM if a student is earning an Associate of Science for Transfer (AS-T) in Biology or Chemistry at a community college that offers CSU-GE for STEM and/or IGETC for STEM as an option for those degrees, and the CSU and UC will accept partial certification of CSU-GE and IGETC. Students will be required to complete additional lower division general education courses upon transfer to the CSU.
